What Does 0.0.0.0 Mean?

0.0.0.0 is the IPv4 unspecified address. Its meaning depends on whether you see it in a host configuration, a server bind setting or a routing prefix.

Examples at a glance

An address or listen setting

Unspecified IPv4
0.0.0.0

As a server bind setting, commonly listens on all local IPv4 interfaces.

A routing prefix

Default route
0.0.0.0/0

Matches every IPv4 address; the next-hop gateway is separate.

Your own device

Loopback
127.0.0.1

Used to reach a service on the local host.

Listening on interfaces

A server configured to bind to 0.0.0.0 commonly listens on all local IPv4 interfaces. Clients normally use an actual reachable address or hostname to connect.

A route is different

The prefix 0.0.0.0/0 matches every IPv4 address. A routing table can use it as a default route when no more specific route matches; its gateway is a separate field.

Not interchangeable with localhost

127.0.0.1 is loopback. Do not rely on browsing to 0.0.0.0 as a portable way of reaching a local application; client handling varies.
