How to read NFT ownership without connecting a wallet

Public NFT ownership can be inspected on a chain explorer without connecting a wallet. ERC-721 and ERC-1155 answer ownership questions differently.

Worked example

How to read NFT ownership without connecting a wallet: annotated comparison
StandardRead-only queryInterpretation
ERC-721ownerOf(tokenId)Owner of an existing token
ERC-1155balanceOf(account, id)Units of an ID held by an account
EitherToken transfer historyPast events, not a permanent ownership guarantee

Use the correct network and contract

Start from the verified collection mapping. Read the token’s current state on the selected chain; an old sale or transfer record does not prove the address still owns it. A nonexistent or burned ERC-721 ID can cause ownerOf to revert.

Ownership is not every permission

A token can have approvals, delegations or project-specific rights that are not summarized by a marketplace owner label. This read-only guide does not infer legal rights, claim eligibility or transferability from one ownership field.

Common pitfalls

  • Avoid the explorer’s write interface when only inspecting data.
  • An owner can be a contract such as a vault, not necessarily a personal wallet.
