Solana wallet, mint and token-account addresses
On Solana, a wallet address, mint address and token-account address can look alike. Their roles come from account data and program ownership, not the text shape.
Worked example
| Identifier | Role | Illustrative relationship |
|---|---|---|
| Wallet owner | Controls ordinary wallet actions | Owner A |
| Mint | Identifies a token type | Mint M |
| Token account | Stores balance for one mint and owner | Account T: mint M, owner A |
Follow the account relationships
A token account records a mint and an owner. An associated token account is a deterministically derived token account for an owner, token program and mint. A person can have token accounts for multiple mints; a mint is not the person’s receive wallet.
Read an explorer result
Check the selected Solana cluster, account owner program and parsed account type. If an explorer labels an address as a mint, use it to identify the asset. For a deposit, follow the receiving service’s wallet and network instructions instead of substituting that mint.
Common pitfalls
- A base58-looking string does not tell you whether it is a wallet or mint.
- Some accounts are program-derived and have no private key.
