The Ethereum zero address is not a receive example
The all-zero Ethereum address is a special value used in many contract conventions. Treat it as an explanatory sentinel, never as your receiving address.
Worked example
| Value | Context | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 0x0000000000000000000000000000000000000000 | All-zero 20-byte value | Syntactically well formed |
| ERC-721 Transfer from zero | Mint event convention | Creation of a token |
| ERC-721 Transfer to zero | Burn event convention | Destruction of a token |
Read the event direction
ERC-721 defines zero-address conventions for mint and burn events. Those conventions describe an event’s meaning; they are not instructions to transfer currency to zero, and not every token implementation has identical behavior.
Why a checker still needs warnings
A generic format checker should distinguish valid spelling from a sensible destination. The zero address has a valid length and hex body but does not belong in a user’s ordinary receive instructions. Our checker explicitly identifies it as a sentinel.
Common pitfalls
- Do not use the zero address as a safe demo payment destination.
- A burn convention is not evidence of a token’s scarcity or investment value.
