City postcode guides

The tables show selected locality postcodes from Japan Post’s national file. They are representative examples, not complete city directories. Registered large-volume recipients can have separate postcodes; use the code published for the exact institution or address. Tokyo here means the 23 special wards.

What is the format of a Japanese postcode?

A Japanese postcode has seven digits, normally written NNN-NNNN. Keep all leading zeros. The 〒 mark is a postal symbol and is not an additional digit.

Can a city or ward have more than one postcode?

Yes. Postcodes can differ by locality, building or registered large-volume recipient. A municipality or ward name alone is not enough to select an exact-address postcode.

How should I write an address for international mail?

Use the recipient’s published address. In Latin-script international addresses, write the recipient and smaller address components before the municipality and prefecture, with the postcode and JAPAN at the end. Japanese-script addresses use the larger-to-smaller order.
